Slide Scanning Service Fairfield County: Convert Your Old Slides Into Digital Memories

Got boxes of old slides sitting around with no way to view them? You're not alone.

Many families have at least a few carousels of 35mm slides from back in the day, and maybe some of the Kodak Instamatic slides mixed in there too. It's probably been a while since you've actually looked at them. Whether you need to transfer slides to digital for preservation or simply want to convert old slides into something you can actually share, we can help.

At Remember Whenever we scan slides from pretty much every format - 35mm, 126, 110, 127, 120 even the rarer 3D Stereo Slides. The goal is simple: turn those slides into files you can actually look at again. On your phone, your computer, your TV, whatever works for you. No projector setup needed.

The wonderful thing about slides is they contain so much more detail than regular photos ever did. When we digitize them properly, you often discover things you never noticed before. Colors become more vibrant, faces are clearer, backgrounds show details you'd forgotten were there.

We offer free pickup and delivery throughout Fairfield County and parts of New Haven County, making it even easier to digitize those old slides.

It's like seeing your old memories in HD for the first time.

3D stereo slides are a unique format that captured two slightly offset images side-by-side to create a three-dimensional viewing experience when seen through a special viewer. These were particularly popular in the 50s and 60s when families would view vacation photos and special moments in 3D using devices like the View-Master or other stereo viewers.

Each slide contains paired images that most people can't view properly anymore since those old stereo viewers are hard to find or no longer work.

When we digitize 3D stereo slides, we scan one side so you can finally see what's actually on them - most people just want to be able to view the images again. If you do want the full 3D effect, both images can be combined into a special .GIF file or viewed on a 3D TV, but that requires additional processing.

These slides often contain some of the most interesting images in a collection simply because families saved their most special moments for the 3D format.

These larger format slides are less common but often contain some of the best quality images in your collection.

  • The 127 format and 127 Superslide were popular in the 40s through 60s, producing square images that are noticeably bigger than regular 35mm slides.

  • The 120 medium format slides are even larger and were typically used by more serious photographers who wanted superior image quality - you might find these if someone in your family was really into photography or worked professionally.

Because these formats capture more detail than smaller slides, they often look stunning when digitized. These aren't the slides that fit in standard carousel projectors, so they've probably been sitting in boxes for years waiting for someone who knows how to handle them properly.

What Does It Cost to Digitize My Old Slides?

Collection of vintage cameras, film rolls, and Kodak flashcubes displayed on a white surface.

Before we get into pricing, it helps to know we can handle whatever slide format you've got - 35mm slides, those square 126 format slides, tiny 110/Instamatic slides, vintage 127 formats, larger 120 medium format slides, or even 3D stereo slides.

Most people don't realize they've accumulated different types over the years, maybe mixing 35mm slides from family vacations with Instamatic slides from a pocket camera.

The cost to convert photographic slides to digital depends on the format and quantity, but the good news is that turning old slides into digital photos is more affordable than most people expect. Once we digitize your slides, you get files you can actually view and share instead of boxes gathering dust in storage.

Our slide digitization service handles everything from common 35mm slides to rare vintage formats. If you're looking to transfer slides to digital, the process is straightforward and our pricing is transparent - no hidden fees, no surprises.

These are the most common slide formats you'll find in family collections and these formats represent the bulk of most slide scanning projects we handle. Converting photographic slides to digital from these formats gives you high-quality digital files that preserve all the detail those original slides captured decades ago.

35mm slides were the standard for decades - those rectangular slides with the thick cardboard or plastic mounts that fit in carousel projectors.

  • The smaller 110 slides (also called Instamatic or Pocket Instamatic slides) came from those compact pocket cameras that were super popular in the 70s and 80s because they were so easy to carry around.

  • The square 126 format slides, sometimes called Instamatic 126, were another Kodak format from the 60s and 70s that produced slightly larger square images.

If you're not sure which type you have, don't worry - we can identify them when we pick up your slides.

It's one of those services that just makes the whole process easier, especially when you're dealing with multiple carousels or boxes of slides that have been sitting around for years

A collection of vintage photo slides and film negatives laid out on a wooden table, with some slides stacked on enclosed trays and others scattered around.

Why Slides Were Actually Amazing (And Still Are)

Back in the day, serious photographers swore by slides. Slide film required far more precise exposure and metering whereas print film was a little more forgiving. You were also able to gather the family for the annual slideshow and show off all your beautiful photographs.

And further still, the slides were far higher quality than you’d get from the prints made from negatives. Those little Kodachrome and Ektachrome slides sitting in your collection? They've got resolution that puts most old prints to shame.

Assorted vintage slide film boxes on a white surface, with one box labeled "Color Slides" featuring a colorful circle design.

The thing about 35mm slides is they were basically the high-definition format of their time. All that image information is still there, locked inside those tiny frames. When we scan them at high resolution, we're pulling out detail that was always there but maybe got lost when people made prints from them later.

Medium format slides like 120 and 127 are even more impressive. Photographers used these bigger formats specifically because they wanted that extra quality. If you've inherited a collection of these, you're sitting on some seriously good image quality that just needs the right scanning to bring it back.

What Time Does to Slides

Slides seem sturdy, but they're not immune to aging. Color slides develop shifts where everything looks too red or blue as the dyes break down differently. Dust gets embedded in the surface, and scratches become permanent scars across your memories, especially if slides were handled roughly or stored carelessly.

Heat and humidity cause the worst damage. Slides in hot attics can warp or curl, while damp basements create spots or cause film to separate from mounts. The sooner you digitize them, the more original quality you'll preserve before further deterioration happens.

The Lost Art of the Slide Show

Remember when families gathered around to watch slide shows? Someone would dim the lights, fire up that projector, and the living room wall became a window into family history. Sure, there were upside-down slides and shadow puppets during boring vacation shots, but seeing those big, bright images projected was something special.

Converting your slides to digital brings back that sharing experience in a modern way. Instead of projector setup, you can create digital slideshows for any TV or computer. Family gatherings get more interesting when you can easily show old vacation slides without technical hassles.

Why Digital Makes Perfect Sense

Nobody sets up slide projectors anymore, which means your collection might as well not exist. Converting to digital files changes everything - those 1978 vacation slides can suddenly appear in family group chats, and your kids can finally see what you looked like at their age instead of just hearing stories.

Digital files don't fade, scratch, or care about temperature. Make unlimited copies, share instantly with family anywhere, and never worry about losing them. Plus, you can view them on big, bright screens with perfect color instead of squinting at tiny slides or dealing with projector setup.

Transferring 35mm slides to digital isn't just about convenience - it's about making sure these memories survive for future generations. Digital files can be backed up, shared instantly, and will look exactly the same in 50 years as they do today.

Professional Equipment Makes All the Difference

Most companies use flatbed scanners for slide scanning and digitization because they're cheaper and can handle multiple formats. We take a different approach. Every 35mm, 126, 110 & 3D Stereo slide that comes through our door gets scanned on a Nikon SuperCoolScan 5000ED - one of the best dedicated film scanners ever made.

The difference comes down to how light reaches your slide. Flatbed scanners put a piece of glass between the sensor and your film, which softens the image slightly. The Nikon sends light directly through the slide without any barriers, using specialized LED lighting and high-quality optics designed specifically for film scanning. This direct approach captures much sharper details and more accurate colors than flatbeds can manage.

The SuperCoolScan also handles dust and scratches automatically during the scanning process, cleaning up your slides without damaging them. When you're dealing with precious family memories, using equipment built specifically for slides makes a huge difference. Your slides get the professional treatment they deserve instead of being run through generic scanning equipment.

Frequently Asked Questions About Slide Scanning

Some questions we often get about our slide scanning service. If you have questions that you don’t see an answer to here or would like more information about our services, please contact us here or check out our main FAQ page.

How much does slide scanning cost?

Our slide scanning service starts at just 79¢ per slide for standard 35mm, 126, and 110 format slides at 2000dpi resolution. Medium format slides (127/120) start at $2.99, and 3D stereo slides start at $1.99. We also offer bulk discounts: 10% off for 501-1000 slides, and 20% off for 1001+ slides. All pricing includes dust removal, color correction, and digital delivery.

What slide formats can you scan?

We scan virtually every slide format including 35mm slides, 126 Instamatic slides, 110 Pocket Instamatic slides, 127 format slides, 120 medium format slides, and 3D stereo slides. If you're not sure what format you have, don't worry - we can identify them when we pick up your slides.

How long does slide digitization take?

Most slide scanning projects are completed within 2-3 weeks, depending on the quantity and any restoration work needed. We offer free pickup and delivery throughout Fairfield County, so you never have to worry about shipping or drop-off timing.

Is slide scanning service available near me in Fairfield County?

Yes! We provide free pickup and delivery throughout all of Fairfield County including Westport, Stamford, Fairfield, Greenwich, Darien, Norwalk, Bridgeport, and all surrounding towns. If you're just outside our standard service area, we charge just $1 per mile each way.

What's the difference between scanning slides at 2000dpi, 3000dpi, and 4000dpi?

Our 2000dpi (Value) scans are perfect for viewing on screens and making standard prints. The 3000dpi (Standard) scans offer higher resolution ideal for larger prints and better detail. Our 4000dpi (Pro) scans capture maximum detail and are best for enlargements, professional use, or if you want to future-proof your digital files. Most customers choose Standard (3000dpi) as the sweet spot between quality and cost.

Can you fix faded or damaged slides?

Yes! All of our slide scans include basic color correction and dust/scratch removal using Digital ICE technology. For slides that need more extensive restoration work - like severe fading, water damage, or color shifts - we offer professional photo restoration services starting at $50 per 30 minutes of work.

What file format will I receive my digitized slides in?

All slides are provided as high-quality JPEG files by default, which is the most compatible format for viewing, sharing, and printing. If you need the highest possible quality, we can also scan your slides as TIFF files for an additional 25¢ per slide.

How do I get my digitized slides back?

Every order includes a free 30-day cloud storage and download link where you can access all your files. We also offer optional USB drives starting at $12 or archival Data DVDs at $15 per 4.5GB. We return your original slides along with the digital copies.

Why is professional slide scanning better than using a flatbed scanner?

We use a Nikon SuperCoolScan 5000ED, one of the best dedicated film scanners ever made. Unlike flatbed scanners that put glass between the sensor and your slides (which softens images), our scanner sends light directly through the slide with specialized LED lighting designed specifically for film. This captures much sharper details and more accurate colors than any flatbed scanner can achieve.

Do you scan slides from old carousel projectors?

Absolutely! Most of the slides we scan come from old Kodak Carousel trays and other slide projectors. We can handle slides in any condition - mounted or unmounted, in carousels, boxes, or slide sheets. We'll carefully remove them from their storage and return everything organized.

What if I don't know how many slides I have?

That's totally normal - most people have no idea how many slides are sitting in their basement or attic! A standard Kodak Carousel tray holds 80 or 140 slides depending on the model, so if you know how many trays you have, that's a good starting point. Otherwise, don't worry about counting them. Just contact us and describe what you've got ("a few boxes," "three carousels," etc.) and we'll give you an estimate. When we pick up your slides, we'll do an exact count and provide you with a firm quote before we start any work. You'll know exactly what it costs before we scan a single slide.
