“Paul is knowledgeable, personable and responsive, my experience with Remember Whenever was terrific.

I had reel-to-reel tapes in need of transfer to digital files, one tape in particular was in marginal condition due to age.

Paul worked wonders and retrieved the audio with excellent sound quality, I am very happy with the results! Highly recommended.”

Reel to Reel Transfer to Digital in Fairfield County, CT

Reel to reel tapes don't last forever. Magnetic tape degrades over time, and once the audio starts to go, there's often no getting it back. If you've got a stack of reels sitting in a closet somewhere, the best time to get them transferred was years ago. The second best time is now.

We're based right here in Fairfield County and we come to you. No shipping your irreplaceable recordings across the country to a fulfillment center. We pick them up, transfer them in our own studio, and drop them back at your door.

We work with quarter-inch tape in all the common configurations, at speeds from 3¾ to 15 ips. Output is MP3 or WAV, whichever works best for how you plan to use your recordings. MP3 for everyday listening and sharing; WAV if you want archival quality or plan to do any editing down the line.

A lot of people ask us whether their tapes are even salvageable. Honestly, most are. Even tapes that look rough on the outside can have perfectly good audio inside. We'll always let you know what we're working with before we start.

Reel to Reel Transfer FAQs

Some questions we often get asked about our reel to reel transfer services. If you have questions that you don’t see an answer to here or would like more information about our services, please contact us here or check out our main FAQ page.

  • Our reel to reel transfer service starts at $39.99 per reel (up to 2 hours). Reels under 10 minutes are $29.99.

For longer reels, it's an additional $10 per hour after the first two. We also offer bulk discounts: 10% off for 6–19 reels, and 20% off for 20 or more.

  • We work with quarter-inch reel to reel tape in half-track (2-track) and quarter-track (4-track) configurations, both mono and stereo. We handle tapes recorded at all standard speeds, including 3¾ ips, 7½ ips, and 15 ips.

  • We deliver your recordings as MP3 files, WAV files or CD, depending on your preference.

MP3 is great for everyday listening and sharing; WAV is the better choice if you want archival quality or plan to do any further editing.

We can also transfer to both file and CD for an additional $15.

  • We're based in Fairfield, CT and offer free pickup and delivery throughout Fairfield County and New Haven County, Connecticut.

We come to you. No need to drop anything off. For addresses beyond our free zone, we charge $1 per mile each way.

  • Most orders are completed within a few days to a week, depending on the size of your collection and our current queue. Larger collections may take a week or two.

We'll give you a realistic timeframe when you get in touch and keep you updated throughout.

  • In most cases, yes. Even tapes that look rough on the outside often have perfectly good audio inside. If we spot any issues when the tape is on the machine - a sticky shed problem, a break, or degraded oxide - we'll contact you before proceeding.

The tapes may need baking, for which there is an extra charge of $30 per reel.

We also offer tape splicing at $10.

  • With a local service like Remember Whenever, your reels never leave Fairfield County.

There's no risk of loss or damage in the mail, you can talk directly to the technician handling your recordings, and you get your originals back in person.

Mail-in services can work for some jobs, but when the recordings are irreplaceable, most people prefer knowing exactly where their tapes are the whole time.

  • MP3 is a compressed format - smaller file sizes, easy to share, and plays on any device.

WAV is uncompressed, so the files are larger but the audio quality is as close to the original as you can get.

We recommend MP3 for most people; WAV is worth it if you're archiving important recordings or plan to edit or remaster the audio.

If you’d like both (or another format such as FLAC) just ask!

  • Yes, we serve the full Fairfield County area, including Westport, Darien, Greenwich, Stamford, Norwalk, New Canaan, Wilton, Ridgefield, Danbury, and Fairfield itself, as well as parts of New Haven County.

Free pickup and delivery means you don't need to travel at all.

  • Yes. Our track splitting service ($10 per reel) separates each song or recording into its own file, so you can skip straight to any track.

If you also have the song names, we can label each file to match for $1 per track. Track naming requires track splitting to be done first.

  • The best way to find out is to let us take a look.

Tapes stored in cool, dry conditions can last decades, but heat, humidity, and age all take a toll.

Common warning signs include a sticky or squeaky tape, and visible oxide shedding that won’t necessarily make itself obvious until we get the reel on a machine.

If you're not sure, just send us a message - we're happy to advise before you commit to anything.

  • We return all your original tapes when we deliver your completed order. We don't keep, copy, or share your recordings.

Your files are available for 30 days via a free download and sharing link (up to 100GB), giving you plenty of time to download and back everything up.
