MicroMV was a Sony-only format that was only on the market for about 5 years. Very few camcorders were sold compared to MiniDV or other formats, so most transfer services never bothered investing in the playback equipment. We did because we know those tapes contain irreplaceable family memories.

They're completely different formats despite both being small digital cassettes from Sony. MicroMV tapes are about 70% smaller than MiniDV and use MPEG-2 compression instead of the DV codec. They're not compatible with each other at all - you need specific MicroMV equipment to play MicroMV tapes.

Yes, like all magnetic tape formats, MicroMV tapes can degrade. The good news is that most MicroMV footage was recorded between 2001-2006, so the tapes are relatively young compared to VHS.
